An explosive sound, taking South African music into a new direction, comes in the form of one of 2018’s hottest debut releases, Querencia.
Cape Town-based alt/folk/rock quintet BRYNN is the product of a few of South Africa’s finest musicians: Jules Terea, Hezron Chetty, David Van Vuuren (Southern Wild), Alex Smillie (Southern Wild) and Eddy Kriel. This stellar cast’s powerful performances, potent lyrics, theatrical energy, and fresh yet complex musicality have left audiences awestruck and demanding an album. Now, BRYNN delivers.
We caught with the band to find out more.
Congrats on being chosen to open for Incubus! What does this mean to you, and how are you feeling about the show?
It’s really hard to describe the feeling! It’s a dream come true for us. They are a band that shaped the way many of us hear and play music today. There aren’t any words to explain what it was like to get the phone call. It’s everything we’ve been working so hard for and we’re going pour our hearts out on that stage.
How long has BRYNN been going for, and how did the band get put together?
Officially, since January 2017. We came together so naturally. I think it was our passionate and expressive approaches to music, as individuals, within the local scene that naturally pulled us together. Its been a dream ever since!
How would you describe your style?
We like to describe our sound as Alternative/Soul Rock.
Congrats on your upcoming debut album, ‘Querencia’. What can fans expect from it?
They can expect a lot of the energy that they see in our live sets. We’ve also really taken our time to carefully temper the tracks and make them as beautiful as possible. There’s a few songs on the record that fans will not have never heard yet, even at our live shows. We’re really excited to share this record with everyone.
What else will you be up to this year?
We’re gonna be sharing our music with as many beautiful people as we can, making some music videos, working on some collaborations and developing our sound even further. We can’t wait for the year ahead!
