Local rock legends aKing are hitting Gauteng this weekend for Park Acoustics. We caught up with Hennie van Halen to find out what the band has been up, and what we can expect from their set at Park Acoustics.
We’re so stoked to see you Park Acoustics this weekend! It feels like it’s been a while since Joburg got to see you guys… what have you been up to?
aKing has actually been on a bit of a hiatus. We’ve all been busy with things unrelated to aKing and the plan is to regroup in May to start on a new album.
Since your debut album in 2008, what are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the local music industry over the years?
The biggest change would definitely be the way the internet has taken over. These days you can’t do anything in the industry if you don’t have an online presence. Most people hear about, purchase and support their favourite music through the internet and I don’t see it slowing down any time soon. The quality of SA music has always been great, people have just become better at making their voices heard and crafting a coherent brand identity. Two things we suck at!
Do you follow local music closely? Any cool bands you think we should keep our eye on?
Thieve. Mindpool. Art Snakes. Thieve.
What can fans expect from your set at Park Acoustics?
We’d rather not give it away. Oh you know, the rock and roll, the singing, the drinking, the good times.
What else is on the cards for 2016?
Well hopefully we’ll have a couple of new tracks for y’all by the second half of 2016, but until then, the aKing team is laying low and taking it E-Z.
