This month sees the release of a brand new album by Elvis Blue. We caught up him to find out more.
You’ve had a remarkable career since winning SA Idols back in 2010. When it comes to these talent shows, why do some artists make it, yet others don’t?
That is a tough question… who knows exactly why one person is successful and another isn’t? Yes, sure, there are some things that you need to have. You must work hard, have the right people on your team, talent and determination, all those things. But even if you have all those things, you also need a lot of luck. I have been one of the fortunate ones.
What would you say some of your highlights have been over the past six years?
Winning four Sama’s, supporting Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and James Blunt when they were in SA, but without a doubt (and without trying to sound too cheesy) having people at my shows, buying my music and hearing my songs on the radio is a highlight every time.
You have managed to cross over seamlessly into the Afrikaans market. What has that been like?
The Afrikaans market is absolutely awesome. Loyal, supportive, and every weekend there is a festival happening somewhere. Afrikaans people have been so good to me. I feel very honoured to be able to make music for them.
This month you’re releasing your new album, ‘Optics’. What can fans expect from this album?
The songs on this album is a little peak into my life for the last three years. I don’t know how people will react to it, only the ones listening to it will be able to tell you that. What I do know is that these are my songs and I am very proud of them.
What else is on the cards for Elvis Blue this year?
I am touring quite a lot this year, and I am also working on a new show called ‘ELVIS BLUE KAAL’ which will debut at Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria in September and then go to festivals country wide. Of course I am also writing the new album.
