We caught up with Cape Town singer / songwriter Glen Hartmann to find out what he’s been up to and what is coming up for him in 2016.
Congrats on the release of your new music video. What made you decide to do a video for ‘On Our Way’?
Thanks! On a general level, the release of music today is always linked with video. These days, we love to hear and also ‘see’ the music. I think by adding video to the release of new music, it becomes much more rewarding for the listener and it helps the listener to connect on a deeper level with the artist and his or her new music. This is why on a general level I wanted to do a video concurrently with the release of the new music.
On a more specific level, I have been in the process of recording new music and this song is one of my favourites. I think it has a really cool story and message. Because of this, I thought it would be cool to try and translate the song into something visual. I decided that this would be the best song to use for my first video of the new material.
The opportunities for music videos to be aired seems to be getting less and less. Do you think there’s still a place for music videos in our industry?
I think from a traditional media perspective you are right – television is less concerned with airing videos. But we live in a different era, the one of social media. Platforms such as YouTube and Facebook provide the new locations for music videos. Musicians have the space to show their music in the form of videos to whoever wants to see them. And they have this power without having to go through traditional media. These days, I think people want to experience new music through music videos. Every major artist that releases their next single does so concurrently with a video. And when you look at the stats on platforms like YouTube, you realise more and more people love experiencing the music through video. Video will allow the listener to connect better with a new song and a new artist. So I guess I think it doesn’t really matter if videos don’t get aired on traditional media. People want music videos, they want to watch them online. And there is a growing desire for more of that. There will always be a place for the video.
We love what you’re doing with your 15 second cover songs on Instagram. Tell us more about that.
Thank you! I just thought it would be a cool project to cover some songs from artists that I think are really good, but I wanted to do it in a visually interesting way (like I said before, we find it more rewarding being able to see something cool while we listen to music!). I wanted to showcase the beauty of the city I live in, specifically the forests. I thought that combining the music and the location would be something cool I could offer to my following.
Can fans expect a new album any time soon?
I think that a new album is the goal with what I am doing! But I am still recording at the moment and I don’t want to rush anything and bring out a sub-par offering. So the recording continues, not exactly sure when it will end. But let me say this: I am extremely excited with the way the music is turning out!
What else is on the cards for you this year?
Perhaps some travelling, some performing, who knows, maybe another music video?
