Chatting To Pedro Barbosa

Mozambique-born, but Pretoria-based artist Pedro Barbosa recently release his debut solo album, Reborn. We caught up with him to find out more.

Congrats on the release of your debut solo album! What can fans expect from this album?

Thank you! Basically a heart deep album, with some groove behind it. I wanted the album to feel fresh yet deep. I expressed a side of me that people didn’t know. Except those really close to me.

Tell us a bit about your journey in music, and what have some of your highlights been?

Its been a long road I have been playing for 22 years now. More than half of my life has been tied to music. And thankfully it seems to be getting better and better, more work more exposure and new adventures, from oversees tours to playing 39 weddings in a year. Highlights are hard – to emphasise gigs are so different, the other day at a small gig at a place Called Malt in Pretoria: I played a gig and there was a oldish couple and they were so loving and expressing with each other it was really inspiring, so towards the end of the gig I mentioned on the mic, and I dedicated a song to them and the lady started crying which made me all sensitive, it was a very special moment for me. Its amazing to touch lives and be touched by them as well. Also highlights was the 2017 tour to Brasil with Passo Largo and Pablo Fagundes, playing local festivals like Mieliepop, Strab, Oppi, Up the Creek to name a few, always great to play Music Festivals. And a big highlight was working with Mark Beling for my latest album, this was a very special album and close to my heart so was a delicate album for me.

Who would you love to collaborate with?

Mark Beling, Johnny Clegg, Black Coffee, Rubber Duck from local acts that immediately come to mind. Oversees probably Eddie Veder, Jack Johnson, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran.

What’s next for Pedro?

Work work work, been playing an average of 6 gigs a week since July 2018 and it seems the rest of 2018 is gonna go that way, I want to save up so I can record the next solo album. Get as much exposure for REBORN and try and break radio. In 2019 we intend to do a tour to Europe Spain and Portugal specifically we were suppose to have done it in August 2017 but due to some complications we had to delay it to next year. In the end I just want to play, write, record and have fun while doing it, and make a living from it.
