David Chislett is an author, artist and well-known go-to-guy in South African music circles. After months of silence we caught up with David to see what he’s been up to.
David, we haven’t seen you around and about in local music circles for ages! Where have you been?
I have been traveling around Europe since the end of April 2013 and am currently based in Amsterdam.
Did you intentionally want a break from the music industry? If so, why?
The travels are more about me personally than anything to do with music or business. I felt I personally needed a break and some fresh inspiration. In 6 years I published 3 books, made a documentary film, toured South Africa 4 times giving workshops and started performing as an artist again… I really needed some down time!
With less direct involvement in the SA music industry lately, what do you think the state of the industry is at the moment?
After nearly a year away it is hard to tell. But I think the basic premise remains: we have the talent, the scope, the people and the ideas. We need to work on our delivery and our understanding of how all the mechanisms work. There is no magic solution and the sooner SA musos realise that the better.
When are you planning on being back in SA, and do you have any exciting projects in the pipeline?
After 10 months of traveling, I have kind of given up on plans. I do not know when I will be back in SA or for how long. Right now I am committed to staying in Amsterdam for the European summer and depending what comes of that, new prospects will emerge (or not). However I am of course working in new things. I am busy with the re-write of the novel I completed last year and am looking to get that out in 2014, I have started a new collection of poetry, I am looking to start gigging in Europe and I have plans for my 2009 short story book as well.
Your book ‘1,2,1,2: A Step By Step Guide To The SA Music Industry’ is one of the most useful books I’ve read – I still refer to it often. I hear you’ve got some news on the book?
Yeah, the book is now 3 years old and I thought it was time to set it free. So in fact it is now available FREE as a PDF download from my site. All you need to do is click this link: http://davidchislett.com/1212-now-avilable-online/ and download the book to your computer/phone/tablet. And then share it with as many people as you can!
